Haslam Announces Departure Of Finance And Administration Commissioner Mark Emkes

Governor Bill Haslam on Monday announced that Finance and Administration Commissioner Mark Emkes will be leaving the administration at the end of May to enjoy retirement and spend more time with his wife in her home country of Spain.
“I am grateful to Mark for the job he’s done as the state’s chief financial officer during the past two and a half years,” Governor Haslam said. “We’ve presented three responsible, thoughtful and strategic budgets, and he has played a significant role in those efforts.
“Mark has brought a fresh perspective to state government with a focus on running it like a business. He has overseen our customer-focused government initiatives and lean management training to help shift our culture to a results-oriented, customer-service organization. I most appreciate his willingness to mentor and develop talented people in state government.”
Before joining the Haslam administration, Mr. Emkes, 60, spent his entire professional career at Bridgestone Americas, working his way up from a trainee to chairman, chief executive officer and president before retiring in February 2010 after 33 years at the company.
“I will always be grateful to Governor Haslam for giving me the opportunity to serve as commissioner of Finance and Administration,” Mr. Emkes said. “It has been a unique and once in a lifetime experience. Having had the chance to participate on a team that helped make government more effective and efficient is truly a great feeling.”
He has lived in Nashville since 2000 and serves on several boards of directors in Middle Tennessee. He is past president of the Middle Tennessee Boy Scout Council and served as chairman of the American Heart Association’s 2010 Nashville Heart Walk. He is also a member of the American Cancer Society’s CEOs Against Cancer, Tennessee Chapter.
Mr. Emkes and his wife, Conchi, have a son, Jonathan, and a daughter, Astrid. They are members of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Brentwood.
The commissioner’s last day will be May 31. The governor has begun a search for his replacement.

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Feb. 22, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Corrections Corporation of America (NYSE:CXW) (the “Company” or “CCA”), America's largest owner of partnership correctional, detention, and re-entry facilities, announced today the appointment of CCA director Mark Emkes as Chairman of the Board of Directors, effective as of the 2016 Annual Meeting of Stockholders. Mr. Emkes succeeds Chairman John Ferguson, who previously announced his intention to retire from CCA's Board effective as of the 2016 Annual Meeting of Stockholders.
Mr. Emkes has been an independent CCA director since August of 2014 and is currently a member of CCA’s Compensation Committee and Nominating and Governance Committee. After a thirty-three year career, he retired in February of 2010 as Chairman, CEO, and President of Bridgestone Americas Inc. He also served as a board member of Tokyo-based Bridgestone Corporation from April of 2004 until his retirement. Shortly after retiring from Bridgestone, he served as Commissioner of Finance and Administration for the State of Tennessee until his retirement from state government in May of 2013. Mr. Emkes has served as President of the Middle Tennessee Council of the Boy Scouts of America, on the Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, on the advisory board of Habitat for Humanity, Nashville Chapter, as a member of CEO’s Against Cancer, Tennessee Chapter, and as Chairman of Nashville’s 2010 American Heart Association’s Heart Walk. He also serves on the boards of Greif, Inc., First Horizon National Corporation, and Clarcor, Inc.

Additionally, Director Joseph Russell has informed the Company of his decision to retire from the Board of Directors and not stand for re-election at the 2016 Annual Meeting of Stockholders, consistent with the mandatory retirement age included in CCA's corporate governance guidelines. Mr. Russell has served as a director since 1999 and is the Chair of CCA's Compensation Committee, a member of the Executive Committee and a member of the Nominating and Governance Committee. CCA Board member Donna Alvarado was appointed to replace Mr. Russell as Chair of the Compensation Committee effective as of the 2016 Annual Meeting of Stockholders.
